We – citizens of the European Union, the United States of America and Canada – call on you, our political leadership, to PROTECT US from the clear and present terrorist danger posed by Hezbollah within our borders and abroad.
Since its founding in the early 1980s, Hezbollah has spread fear, death and terror throughout the world. Regrettably, we in the West know all too well the true nature of this organization. In 1983, Hezbollah murdered 299 people – including 240 US Marines and 58 French soldiers – when suicide bombers attacked the barracks of American and French peace-keepers in Beirut. A year later, Hezbollah detonated a bomb in a restaurant in Torrejon, Spain, killing 18 and wounding 83 more. And the following year, it hijacked a plane in Athens. Hezbollah’s reign of terror is truly global, striking as far away as Buenos Aires, where a 1994 attack on a community centre killed 85 people.
Recent events has made the danger to us even clearer. On 18 July 2012, six innocent civilians lost their lives when a bomb exploded on an airport bus in Burgas, Bulgaria. The initial Bulgarian investigation into the attack specifically names Hezbollah. And just this March, a Cypriot court found Hossam Taleb Yaccoub, a self-identified member of Hezbollah, guilty of plotting attacks in Cyprus. Yaccoub, a Swedish-Lebanese national, testified that he also served as a courier for the global terrorist organization in the Netherlands and France. Germany’s foreign intelligence agency, the Bundesnachrichtendienst, warns that there are 950 Hezbollah members and sympathizers in Germany alone.
The evidence clearly shows that Hezbollah is getting more and more dangerous, putting citizens of the West at even greater risk. Yet our political leadership is doing nothing to PROTECT US!
Over the past years, Canada, The Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States have all taken steps to curb the threat posed by Hezbollah. It is time for the rest of the European Union to follow suit and designate Hezbollah as terrorists.
If just one country refuses to take action against Hezbollah, we all remain in great danger. From the European links to the attacks in the US on September 11, 2001 to the 2006 plot by Islamist terrorists to blow up at least 10 airliners flying from the UK to the US and Canada, the safety of all citizens in the West is inextricably linked. All of our leaders must act together.
Thus, we, the signatories below, stand together and call on you to put your political differences aside, join forces and PROTECT US from Hezbollah’s global threat by designating them as the terrorist organization that they are. Anything short of this would be a dereliction of your responsibility to us, your citizens.
